Clarington is developing a GIS and GIS Data Strategy to guide how we use maps, data, and technology to support services, planning, and decision-making.
As part of this work, we’re asking residents to share their feedback to help shape what comes next.
What is GIS?
You might not think about it, but you use GIS more often than you realize.
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is the technology that powers many of the maps and tools you use to explore your community, find information, and access services.
For example, if you’ve ever:
- Checked where the snowplow is
- Looked up a park or sports field
- Dropped a pin when submitting a service request
— you’ve already used GIS.
If you’ve used any of these maps and tools, you’ve already experienced GIS in action:
While maps are the most visible part, GIS is more than what you see on the screen.
Behind the scenes, GIS helps us:
- Collect and organize location-based information
- Connect data to places across Clarington
- Identify patterns and trends
- Make informed decisions about services and planning
In short, maps show information — GIS helps us understand and use it.
Help map out what’s next
We’re updating how we use GIS to better serve our community, and your input will help guide future improvements.
Take a few minutes to complete our short survey and share how you use maps today and what you’d like to see in the future.
